Lunchtimes and Food in School

Great Greenfield Lunchtimes

At Kippax Greenfield, we see lunchtime as an important extension of our curriculum. They are a valuable opportunity for children to continue learning beyond the classroom: a time for developing social skills, practising good table manners and taking responsibility for themselves and others.

At the start of each half-term, children choose where they will sit and and get to know their table group. This helps to build strong friendships and a sense of belonging, while also supporting those who may feel a little more anxious by providing consistency as they know where they’ll be sitting each day and who they’ll be sitting with.

Children are encouraged to take pride in their dining space by clearing away their plates and helping to wipe the tables after eating. This helps foster our values of responsibility, collaboration and respect for our shared environment.

During lunch, children spend around 20 minutes in the hall, chatting and enjoying their meal with their table group. Our lunchtime staff then celebrate the children at the end of this time, recognising good manners, respect and responsibility by awarding values tickets and celebrating achievements together.

Our older pupils also play a special role during lunchtime, supporting our younger children by helping them to cut up their food, carry their trays and model polite, considerate behaviour. This nurturing approach helps build a sense of community and reinforces the values that lie at the heart of Kippax Greenfield.

School Meals

Our school has a three-week rotating menu system offering four meal options each day including two main meal choices (one of which is vegetarian), a jacket potato and a sandwich option. The children choose in advance so that they always get their preferred choice. Click here for our most recent menu.

We are also able to cater for any dietary requirements that your child may have, working closely with JPL Catering to ensure that every child has the option of a healthy, nutritionally balanced, freshly cooked meal. Please let the office know if your child has any special dietary requirements.

School dinners are a non-profit-making scheme and it is therefore important that dinner money is paid promptly. Dinner money can be paid online via Arbor. Please contact the office if you require further information about paying.

The price of a school meal is £2.55. School meals are free for children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 under the universal FSM scheme. Please see below for more information about free school meals.

Packed Lunches

Children can also choose to bring a packed lunch from home. We encourage healthy eating as it helps children stay focused and full of energy throughout the day. Please avoid sending sugary drinks and keep treats to a minimum. Water is always available for all children.

Free School Meals

If you’re a parent, carer or guardian of a child at school and on benefits or a low income, your child may be entitled to free school meals no matter what year they are in - which could save you £420 per year per child. Please click here to find out more.

Please be aware that if your child currently receives Universal Free School Meals (Reception to Year 2), but is also eligible for Free School Meals, it is important that you still claim them as we will also receive additional funding to support extra learning opportunities for them in the classroom too.

School Milk

For any child in school, a small carton of milk can be bought in advance. Children who have milk usually drink it just before or after their morning playtime.

Fruit and Snacks

Children are welcome to bring a healthy snack for breaktime to help keep their energy levels up throughout the morning. As part of our commitment to promoting healthy lifestyles, we ask that snacks are nut-free and do not include crisps, chocolate bars or sweets. We also ask that children avoid cereal bars as many of these contain high levels of sugar and are not as healthy as they may seem.

We encourage simple, easy-to-eat, healthy options such as fruit slices, vegetable sticks (like cucumber, carrot or pepper), raisins, plain rice cakes or a low-sugar yoghurt.

We are proud to take part in the Government School Fruit and Vegetable Scheme, which is part of the national five-a-day programme to encourage healthy eating habits. This means that every 4 to 6 year-old receives a free piece of fruit or vegetable each school day. The fruit and vegetables on offer vary weekly but often include carrots, tomatoes, pears, satsumas and apples.

Nut-Free School

We are a nut-free school and do not use nuts in any of the food prepared on site. Our suppliers also provide us with nut-free products, however, we cannot guarantee freedom from nut traces. Please help us by ensuring all snacks and packed lunches are free of all nut products. Please be aware that, in the interests of children’s safety, our staff make regular checks to ensure these rules are being followed.
